The Purposed Trek

Keep me safe, O God, I've run for dear life to you. I say to God, "Be my Lord!" Without you, nothing makes sense.

Golden Ring

I was at small group a little while ago and we were talking about James 2 in the Bible. The passage says in verses 1-4 about not showing favoritism or discriminating against people because of things they may or may not have.

...Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in shabby clothes also comes in. If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, "Here's a good seat for you," but say to the poor man, "You stand there" or "Sit on the floor by my feet," have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?

And then we talked about our golden rings. Meaning these days when someone walks in we don't look for their gold ring necessarily, but we measure them against something. What is that something for you, what is your golden ring? When someone walks in the room what do you measure them against? It might be appearance or could be education or social status. Whether tangible or intangible it isn't right, but we all do it regardless of knowing we hate it when it is done to us.

What is a 'golden ring' to you and what do you consider 'rags'?

Good question. I've noticed since moving to a new city and trying to find new friends that I definitely discriminate more than I thought. I've seen that I tend to shrug people off as potential friends if they don't seem very smart and deep. Even if someone is just a loud person, I try to keep them at a distance. Strangely enough, some of my closest (current) friends are loud people!
